What is “The Lie?”

Romans 1:20-25
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for “the lie.”

The “Lie” goes all the way back to the garden. In Genesis 3:1-5 it says, Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'”

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The main “Lie” that Satan sowed to Adam and Eve was – “You can disobey God, live in sin, and still be like God or have a glorious life.” This lie frequently is seen in those that are followers of God. The enemy knows that if He can continue to make God’s followers believe that they can sin and still be like God, they will always find themselves out of His manifest presence, powerless to take dominion, and fruitless in the character of Jesus. Jesus came to destroy this lie and to give man back the true Life. Jesus came as a living example to show man that his character is like God now and his nature is not to sin, to live in the Spirit, and to overcome and take dominion by the power that was given to him through the life and cross of Jesus. Live with “Spirit”, not the “Lie.”
